A deadly train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the speed and execution of the country's key government projects.
The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Train, a line developed to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was designed to provide an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving economic development in the area.
“We shall meticulously determine the cause of this incident,” stated the country's president.
The official reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose time in office concluded the year before. This project was closely associated with his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively poorer part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The development of both rail lines was overseen by the army, marking a dramatic expansion of its duties in civilian infrastructure. They were executed at an rapid rate, beating predictions to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also sparked significant concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had two non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party urged an prompt suspension in the building and running of all similar projects.
This pause was proposed pending a comprehensive safety audit. The party declared that the loss of life "requires swift accountability."
In response, the head of state insisted that the train had been operating in total accordance with all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the construction and management of these strategic initiatives.
