Seven alleged members of Germany's left-wing extremist organization stand trial over series of violent incidents

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and legal charges

Earlier this month, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was responsible for attacks on sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the repeated targeting of a restaurant owner in central Thuringia, whose venue reportedly served as a gathering spot for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some with serious injuries.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the city of Dresden, Germany. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for attacks in Budapest during February 2023, around an annual event called the “day of honor” that attracts rightwing extremists from throughout the continent.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is currently on trial in Hungary for multiple charges of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Regional context and organizational structure

Eastern Germany has long been a breeding ground for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical antifascist groups that counter them.

Authorities characterize Johann G. as a high-ranking member within Antifa Ost, responsible for planning attacks and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M, he is accused of organizing instruction courses where radical left activists practised combat techniques and simulated violent actions. At depots overseen by the suspect, the network reportedly stockpiled hammers, pepper spray, concealment items and communication devices.

Prior legal cases and global responses

A different activist previously active with the group, Lina E., became a cause celebre within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for targeting presumed far-right targets.

The US designation makes group members ineligible to enter the US, freezes any assets they may have within the American economy and makes it illegal providing material support to them.

The German right-wing AfD party welcomed the US decision and urged the German administration to take similar action. However, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “taken note” of the American classification.

“The danger from the organization has recently decreased significantly. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have either received convictions or remain detained.”
